In 2024, four friends turned a weekly mahjongg night into a ritual we couldn’t keep to ourselves. Before mahj fever swept the country, we started hosting monthly games in Chanya’s parents’ apartment— pulling up extra chairs and welcoming friends of friends. Now we’re bringing that same around-the-table magic to more people, and we can’t wait to mahj with you.
Today, Not Your Mother’s Mahjong is a growing community of regulars, newcomers, teachers, strategists, and people who mostly came for a drink and left with new friends. We host at the restaurants and bars we already love—because the best way to learn a game is to make a night of it.
Pull up a chairNot at all. Choose a beginner lesson and we’ll teach you everything from tile names to your first hand.
Absolutely. We’ll help you find a table; many members arrive solo and leave with a new group chat.
We teach and play American mahjong (also called American mah jongg), using the current National Mah Jongg League card.
