Frequently asked questions
Do I need to know how to play?+
Not at all. Choose a beginner lesson and we’ll teach you everything from tile names to your first hand.
Can I come alone?+
Absolutely. We’ll help you find a table; many members arrive solo and leave with a new group chat.
What kind of mahjong do you play?+
We teach and play American mahjong (also called American mah jongg), using the current National Mah Jongg League card.
Where are events held?+
At fun restaurants and bars across Manhattan and Brooklyn. Each Luma event includes the exact venue and details.
Will there be food and beverages?+
Yes! We host at bars and restaurants with excellent food and drinks. Come hungry, order generously, and help us show some love to the local spots that make mahj night possible.
Do I need to bring anything?+
Nope—we’ve got the tiles, cards, and everything you need to learn and play. Just bring your game face, good energy, and a willingness to say “one more round.”
